Chapter 19 - What My Father Signed

The second ledger was real. So were three checks made out to my father. For an hour I couldn't look at Adrian, because I was terrified that the truth I'd chased would destroy the person I was trying to remember.

Simone asked the investigator for the dates and bank-clearing records. The first check was deposited into an account Daniel used to buy replacement security equipment. The second was endorsed over to an emergency maintenance contractor. The third was never cashed.

"They were reimbursements," Ruth said after reviewing the invoices. "Daniel refused to use foundation money without a matching work order. Elliot kept copies of the checks and stripped out the paperwork."

The receipts were still in Dad's filing cabinet at home, folded behind an instruction manual for a broken dishwasher. Noah found them in ten minutes.

I laughed when he showed me. Then I cried so hard I had to sit down.

"He never threw anything away," Noah said.

"Not if he thought somebody might need it."

The district attorney announced charges against Elliot for financial fraud, obstruction, and offenses related to Daniel's death, subject to the evidence at trial. Heller faced separate charges. Vanessa's admissions and records formed part of an agreement to cooperate; her own criminal exposure remained under review.

Nothing about it brought Dad back. The first night after the arrests I dreamed of him fixing the kitchen light, his feet visible under the ladder. I woke before he turned around.

The following week, a judge approved the independent audit and appointed a temporary administrator for the foundation. Adrian resigned from the family-controlled board and backed an oversight plan that would publish grants and expenditures openly.

At a hearing, Vanessa passed me in the corridor. She wore a modest navy suit instead of red satin.

"Maya," she said, "I'm sorry."

I faced her. "You can prove that by telling the truth when it costs you."

She nodded, and for once there were no cameras waiting for her reaction.

That evening Noah brought me a package recovered from my father's old desk. It was labeled FOR MAYA, WHEN SHE'S READY TO OPEN HER OWN PLACE.

Inside was a savings passbook and a letter I had never seen.
