Chapter 10 - What the Drive Remembered

The drive from Grandma's metal box was encrypted. Gabriel hired an independent digital forensic specialist, Dr. Nina Park, to make a verified copy before attempting access. She worked from documented authorization provided by the trust's counsel. Nobody wanted the evidence challenged because someone got impatient.

By midnight Nina had recovered an index of audio files and a short video. The video showed Grandma at her kitchen table, wrapped in a blue cardigan, looking straight at the camera.

"If Sophie is watching this," she said, "Richard has probably done what I begged him not to do."

I covered my mouth.

Grandma explained that she had secured the Harbor House trust to preserve both its money and its property. She believed Richard was quietly assembling a luxury redevelopment project that depended on buying the last affordable parcel along the waterfront.

"He told me he could build the apartments and make money at the same time," she said. "Maybe he could. But every family he promised to house disappeared from the final drawings. Sophie saw the problem before I did."

She paused to catch her breath. "I made Sophie the successor design steward. That gives her authority over her own plans, not the trust's bank account. No one may use her signature to transfer trust property."

I watched her fingers tremble around her mug.

"I asked Gabriel to keep certain records because I was afraid of what my own son might do. If you are hearing this, there are copies in three places. One is with the trust's attorney. One is in the warehouse. The third is with the person Richard believes will always protect him."

The recording ended.

"Who is that?" Talia asked.

I thought of Mom signing papers. Of Claire smiling while I stood silent. Of Evan hesitating with his glass in hand.

"I don't know."

Nina opened the recovered file list. One audio recording was labeled MAY17_CALL. The sound was distorted but intelligible.

My father's voice: "Close the shelter. If the residents leave, the city will approve the revised boundary."

Martin: "Vivian already withdrew the match. We can tell them the funds are delayed."

My father: "Do it before the next inspection."

I felt the room tilt. The shelter closure hadn't been collateral damage. It had been a step in the plan.

Then a third voice entered the call.

"Richard, that's enough," the woman said. "I kept the documents."

It was Claire.
