Chapter 8 - The Story She Stole

The page Mom photographed contained one sentence underlined twice: Sometimes I wish Marianne would disappear from our lives forever.
It was followed by several paragraphs, cut off in the photo, describing why Emily felt unsafe. Mom posted only the underlined line in the family chat.
"See?" she wrote. "Threats against me. I've been afraid of this girl for years."
My uncle Raymond replied with a string of angry emojis. Linda asked whether Mom should get a lawyer. "Don't answer them," Emily said, setting her bag by the door. "You'll spend all day arguing with people who already picked a side."
"She stole something from our bedroom."
"I know. That's why Jess is coming."
Jess arrived twenty minutes later in her dented blue Honda. She hugged Emily only after asking if touching was okay. That small courtesy made my throat tighten. I'd spent years insisting my mother meant well while strangers offered my wife more respect than I did.
Jess looked at me. "She called me from your Christmas party last year. She was crying in a grocery-store parking lot because she didn't want you to see. Did you know that?"
I shook my head.
"She didn't want to make you choose between your wife and your mother. Funny thing is, you chose every time anyway."
I had no useful answer.
Emily agreed to make a formal statement about the hair-pulling and the break-in. I went with her to the station, but when the officer asked her what happened, I stayed quiet unless she wanted me to speak. She described the kitchen, the bruises, the missing notebook, and the porch camera. The officer took the recordings and gave us a report number. No one promised instant justice.
Outside, Emily said, "Thank you for not answering for me."
"I didn't know I did that."
"That's what made it so hard to stop."
Jess drove her away. I watched the car turn the corner and felt the size of the empty house settle around me.

An hour later, two officers knocked on my door. One held a separate report.
"Mr. Turner," she said, "your mother alleges your wife assaulted her at dinner. We need your statement."
