Chapter 7 - The Photograph in the Safe

Daniel's father's office occupied the top floor of Mercer Holdings, a glass tower downtown. The building was mostly empty by the time they arrived. Security recognized Daniel and let them through, though the guard's eyes lingered on the detective.
The office smelled of leather and old paper. A framed photograph showed Daniel at seventeen beside his father, Thomas Mercer, a broad-shouldered man with a politician's smile.
“Safe is behind the painting,” Daniel said.
Ruiz checked the wall before allowing him to move it. The safe was old, but Daniel knew the combination.
Inside were property deeds, a passport, a stack of cash, and a sealed envelope.
Claire recognized her mother's handwriting.
Daniel handed it to her.
The envelope contained two photographs and a letter addressed to Claire. The first photograph showed Thomas Mercer standing outside the Whitmore studio on the night of the fire. The second showed June passing him a paper bag.
Claire read the letter.
My darling Claire, if this reaches you, then I failed to keep the world gentle for you. Your father was not a bad man at first. He became frightened, then greedy, then cruel. June helped him because she believed the family name mattered more than the people who carried it. I tried to stop them. Rosa tried too. Remember her daughter. She deserves the truth as much as you do.
At the bottom, Evelyn had written:
The dress was never meant to make you rich. It was meant to make you free.
Claire folded the letter carefully.
A small sound came from the hallway.
Ruiz turned. “Police. Show yourself.”
A man in a maintenance uniform stepped into the doorway. He held a phone in one hand and a short metal bar in the other.
“Give me the envelope,” he said.
Daniel moved in front of Claire.
The man swung. Daniel took the blow across his shoulder and fell against the desk. Ruiz drew her weapon and ordered the man to drop the bar.
He ran.
An officer chased him down the corridor. The elevator doors began to close, but the man shoved through them and vanished.
Ruiz helped Daniel sit up. Claire clutched the letter.
“Who was he?” she asked.
Daniel looked at the open safe.
“Someone who works for my mother.”
Ruiz's radio crackled.
A patrol unit had found the black sedan.
It was empty.
And Margaret Mercer was gone.

After the call, Claire stood still with the phone in her hand. The room seemed too warm. She remembered June brushing her hair before school, June bringing soup when she was sick, June sitting beside her at Evelyn's grave. The memories did not disappear. They changed shape, and that was worse. Betrayal did not erase love; it made every old kindness harder to understand.
