Chapter 13 - A Son in the Dark

"Grant!" Evelyn called before Maya could stop her.
The face vanished. Maya ran toward the farmhouse with two officers, shouting for Grant to show his hands. Evelyn waited on the gravel, unable to climb the stairs without help, furious at the betrayal of her own body.
A window shattered at the back of the house. Then came a shout, footsteps, a burst of radio static. Maya emerged a minute later holding the family photograph, its glass cracked across Evelyn's younger face.
"He got out through the cellar," Maya said. "He knew the old coal chute."
"Of course he did." Evelyn's voice sounded hollow. "He played there when he was six."
The night seemed to fold in around her. She remembered small hands covered in garden dirt, a boy with missing front teeth asking his mother whether the lake had a bottom. She remembered kissing those hands. She remembered giving him everything she knew how to give.
"I keep thinking I could've noticed earlier," she said.
Maya crouched beside the wheelchair. "You noticed now. That's why you're alive."
Evelyn opened her fist. A scrap of paper had been tucked behind the photograph's cardboard backing. On it, Grant had written: ASK DAD ABOUT LUCY.
Lucy. The name struck Evelyn in the chest. In 1989, Lucy Bell, the judge's youngest daughter, had disappeared at seventeen. People said she'd run away. Evelyn had helped organize a search. Daniel had spoken to detectives for hours.
"What does Lucy have to do with us?" she murmured.
Maya read the note. "Sheriff Bell's sister."
A second message was written on the back: THE LAKE KEEPS WHAT THE FAMILY HIDES.
Maya called for an investigator to search the waterfront. Evelyn barely heard. She had remembered something Daniel once said after Lucy vanished: I know where she went, but nobody would believe me.
He had refused to explain and had carried that silence for decades.

Her phone rang. Daniel's hospital room displayed on the screen. She answered immediately.
A man's voice, low and controlled, said, "Your husband isn't in his bed anymore. If you want him alive, bring the drive to the dock. Alone."
