Chapter 18 - The Confession That Wasn't

Bell survived. Paramedics suspected a medical episode, and doctors declined to speculate publicly. The so-called confession was three sentences on hotel stationery: I FAILED ADAM VOSS. I AM RESPONSIBLE. LET THIS END.

News outlets called it an admission of murder within an hour.

Chen did not.

"It might be remorse, coercion or forgery," she said. "We compare handwriting and establish where the note came from."

Mara wanted certainty badly enough to be frightened of that want.

Bell's aide reported that Whitlock had visited the general that afternoon. Hotel security showed the meeting, then a second visitor entering through a service elevator. The second visitor wore a maintenance uniform and a cap pulled low.

"The same contractor number as the cart outside your room," Turner said.

Investigators traced the service badge to an employee whose credentials had been cloned. The actual employee had been on vacation.

Mara studied the faces on the old photo from Adam's bag. One figure had stood near the transport truck with his head half-turned, a slight scar marking his chin. Whitlock.

The investigation now pointed toward an effort to make Bell look like the sole culprit while Whitlock escaped scrutiny.

Chen secured financial records proving Whitlock controlled the accounts through which counterfeit profits moved. Harlan had approved invoices and erased rejection notices. Bell had accepted gifts and intervened when Adam complained. The separate questions of intent, conspiracy and Adam's death remained for prosecutors to prove.

Bell, awake in the hospital, asked to speak with Mara. Chen initially objected, then allowed a controlled, recorded interview with counsel and a medical clearance.

Bell looked smaller without his uniform.

"I didn't know Whitlock would hurt him," he whispered.

"You knew Adam was in danger," Mara said.

Bell shut his eyes. "I told him to meet us. I told him we could settle it privately."

"What happened on that road?"

"Whitlock took his keys. Adam fought to get them back. I went to call someone. When I returned, Adam was gone."

Mara's voice nearly cracked. "Why didn't you report it?"

Bell opened his hand. In it was a small brass key.

"Because Whitlock showed me what he'd put in my daughter's car."
