Chapter 1 - The Heel

Vanessa Sterling's diamond-studded heel missed Naomi Reyes's eye by less than an inch.

Naomi jerked sideways. The shoe sliced past her cheek, caught the edge of her serving tray, and sent champagne flying across a thousand-dollar dress.

"You little—" Vanessa hissed.

Naomi slapped her.

The crack snapped through the Halcyon Hotel ballroom like a gunshot. Three hundred guests stopped talking. Behind Vanessa, a thirty-foot screen still showed the face of a smiling woman in a faded red sweater.

Naomi's mother.

"She attacked me!" Vanessa shrieked. "Security!"

Two guards seized Naomi by the arms. She didn't fight them. ELENA REYES: A HERO WE WILL NEVER FORGET glowed above a donation total climbing past four million dollars.

"You forgot her fast enough when you blamed her for the fire," Naomi said.

Vanessa straightened her gown. "Your mother caused that fire. The Sterlings gave your family every chance to move on. Apparently, gratitude isn't something you were raised with."

"She died pulling children out of a burning building."

"She was a cleaning woman who didn't know her place. And neither do you."

More phones rose. Screens showed Naomi in an apron, held by two guards. Vanessa looked up at the cameras mounted above the chandeliers. For the first time all night, fear crossed her face.

She grabbed the sleeve of Caleb Voss, the Sterling family's security chief, and whispered, "Delete the footage."

Voss went still. "Mrs. Sterling, the hotel system isn't ours."

"Then make it ours."

The gala host reached for his microphone, but its red light stayed on. A low murmur rolled through the room. Naomi caught a glimpse of Voss's tablet as the guards marched her away. Under the live ballroom feed was another folder, one with a date from three years earlier.

BRIAR HOUSE / FIRE NIGHT / ARCHIVE CONNECTED.

Naomi stopped walking.

Voss turned the screen against his chest, too late.

"Why," Naomi asked, "do you still have cameras from the building where my mother died?"

Voss looked at Vanessa. Vanessa's expression answered before either of them spoke.

"Get her out," Vanessa said. "Now."

And when Voss lowered his eyes, Naomi saw something far worse than anger: recognition.
