Chapter 37 - Eighteen Families, One Signature

Judge Vane's name appeared on the grants, the condemnation orders, and the paperwork declaring my mother dead. Now it appeared on a vehicle-use authorization issued the night our cabin burned. His personal security company had provided the car Crowley drove.
Agent Lin didn't announce an arrest just because the pattern looked obvious. Her team checked payment records, interviewed drivers separately, and obtained a warrant for the security company's files. By the end of the week, they had evidence linking Vane to the forged records and to instructions to suppress witnesses.
Luz published the first verified report. It didn't call Mom a hero or Harlan a monster. It listed eighteen families, the dates they requested housing, the notices they never received, and the amounts diverted. Sometimes facts can make people angrier than adjectives.
One family was the Walkers. Mr. Walker had taken his daughter to school from a borrowed van for seven months. He came to the hospital with a photograph of their old kitchen, its yellow curtains still hanging behind a demolition notice.
"Your mom saved that picture," he told me. "She said a house isn't just a number in a file."
Mom apologized for not stopping it sooner. Mr. Walker shook his head. "You were the first person who listened. That's more than the others did."
Elias entered a formal agreement to cooperate and make restitution for the false manifests. His lawyer said he could still face penalties. The investigators returned the freight records to the federal case as authenticated evidence, rather than treating Elias's word as enough.
I saw him in the hospital corridor and almost walked past.
"Did you know Crowley would come for us?" I asked.
"No. But I helped build the system that let him get away with things."
"Are you going to prison?"
"I don't know. The decision isn't mine."
I remembered his first answer at the cabin: watch what I do. Decide from that.
"I'm still mad," I said.
"You should be."
I let him hold Milo for one minute while I washed my hands. Milo tugged his sleeve and drooled on the cuff. Elias smiled with tears standing in his eyes.

Then Sonia's phone rang. Judge Vane had vanished just before investigators arrived to execute an arrest warrant.
His private plane was requesting clearance to leave the state.
