Chapter 12 - The Missing Evidence

That night Emily came to my house with no makeup, wet hair, and two packed suitcases.

“He went through my phone,” she said.

I led her into the kitchen.

“I asked him about his father. He said Charles was dead. When I showed him the photograph, he grabbed my phone and deleted it.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No. But he scared me.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“You can stay as long as you need.”

She slept in her childhood room. I sat awake downstairs with Ruth, who had brought fresh copies of the evidence on encrypted drives.

At two in the morning, someone tested the front door handle.

We heard it clearly: a metallic rattle, a pause, another rattle.

Ruth called the police. I switched on the porch lights and looked through the security camera feed. A hooded figure stepped away from the door, entered a dark sedan, and drove off. We saved the video.

At dawn, Emily appeared in the hallway.

“I'm not marrying him,” she said.

A strange combination of relief and grief washed over me.

“You don't have to decide forever this morning.”

“Yes, I do. At least I know I won't walk into that ceremony pretending nothing happened.”

Then her phone rang. Vivian.

Emily answered on speaker.

“My dear,” Vivian said, “we need to talk. Your mother's medical bills can become very expensive. Wouldn't it be terrible if certain assistance suddenly disappeared?”

Emily's face went white.

We finally understood what the Whitmores believed they owned: not just their reputation, but our choices.

We made up the spare bed without talking about what would happen next. Emily found an old stuffed rabbit on the shelf, its ears permanently bent from years of being dragged to school and back. She held it against her chest and laughed once, embarrassed. I told her no one had to be grown up every minute. By morning the rabbit was tucked beneath her pillow. When I noticed it, I felt a fierce tenderness that no threat, no forged paper, and no Whitmore fortune could ever purchase.
