Chapter 17 - The Envelope With My Name

I told Owen to bring it over.

Rachel joined by video call while I opened the envelope at my kitchen table.

Inside were three pages.

The first was a list titled DELANEY CONTINGENCIES.

If she resists:

Mom talks to her.

Dad reminds her about family.

Tell Owen she already agreed and is getting cold feet.

Do not let vendors contact her directly until final week.

Use west gate for early setup.

I stopped reading.

Owen looked sick.

Rachel said, “Keep going.”

The second page was worse.

It was a draft social media post accusing me of withdrawing the venue because I was jealous.

The date on the document showed it had been created two months before our dinner.

Two months before the sauce.

Two months before I had publicly refused.

Brielle had prepared a story in which I was the villain before the final confrontation ever happened.

The third page was a budget note.

Sell story if wedding blows up? Family betrayal content performs.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Owen finally said, “She was going to turn this into content.”

I put the paper down.

Oddly, I was not angry.

Not immediately.

I felt cold.

The sauce at dinner had seemed impulsive. The fake tears had seemed reactive. The wedding-day video had looked like grief spilling onto the internet.

But here was evidence that she had imagined the public fallout in advance.

Rachel’s voice came through my laptop.

“This document matters. Preserve the original.”

Owen nodded.

I looked at him. “Did you ever see this?”

“No.”

“I believe you.”

He let out a breath that sounded like he had been holding it for days.

Then my phone rang.

Mom.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Delaney, Brielle left.”

“Left where?”

“We don’t know. Her car is gone.”

“Did she take anything?”

“A suitcase.”

I looked at the documents on the table.

Mom continued. “She left a note.”

“What does it say?”

There was a pause.

Then my mother read it aloud.

You all chose Delaney. I hope she was worth it.

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, call her friends. Call Owen. Do not chase her alone.”

Owen was already dialing.

Rachel spoke firmly. “If there is any indication of immediate danger, contact emergency services. Don’t assume either way.”

We did not know whether Brielle was trying to scare everyone, disappear for a night, or truly falling apart.

For the first time, consequences did not feel satisfying at all.

They felt dangerous.

Then Owen’s call connected.

He listened for three seconds.

May you like

His face changed.

“I know where she is.”
