Chapter 19 - No More Hiding

The ballroom erupted.
Donors stood. Phones rose. Security rushed toward the stage. Harlan shouted that the documents were fake, but the screen displayed the original file metadata and the recorded transfer numbers.
Ruiz's team entered through the side doors.
"Richard Harlan," she called, "you're under arrest."
The mayor tried to leave through the service corridor.
Lily stepped into his path.
"Move," he snapped.
"No."
"You have no idea what you're interfering with."

Outside, cameras flashed. Reporters shouted questions. Sofia stood beside Marcus, crying with relief. Eddie had come from the hospital with Victor's doctor threatening to send him straight back.
Victor appeared at the ballroom entrance, his arm in a sling.
Lily stared. "You were told to stay in bed."
"I was told a lot of things."
"You could have reopened the wound."
"I'll try to be more considerate next time."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Victor said, "Your mother would be proud."
Lily looked away. "I wish she could tell me herself."
Victor nodded. "So do I."
Across the street, a dark sedan sat with its lights off.
A man in the back seat watched the ballroom doors.

He lifted a phone.
"Matteo was right," he said. "The girl is the key."
