Chapter 9 - The Ferry Terminal

A flashlight beam cut across the room.
Lily heard Eddie's breath catch. Victor stepped in front of her, but she pushed past him and crouched behind the sofa.
Three men entered wearing dark jackets and plain black masks. They moved like professionals. No shouting. No wasted motion.
"Where's the notebook?" one asked.
Victor said nothing.
The first man lifted his weapon.
Lily threw a glass ashtray at the ceiling light. The room went dark again. A shot punched through the sofa. Eddie tackled one intruder. Victor drove another into the kitchen counter.
Lily slipped through the back door.
She ran down the stairwell and into the alley, clutching the notebook beneath her coat. A car waited at the curb. Its passenger door opened.
"Get in," said a woman.
Lily stopped.
The woman was in her late fifties, with silver hair and a scar cutting through one eyebrow.
"Who are you?"
"Someone your mother trusted."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you'll get before they find us."
The woman showed her a small silver pendant. Lily recognized it from the photograph in the storage room.
"Your mother gave me this the night Daniel died," the woman said. "My name is Elena Ward. I was the harbor clerk."
Lily got in.
Elena drove without turning on the headlights.
At the ferry terminal, the water slapped against the pilings. The old building had been closed for years, its windows boarded and its signs rusted.
Elena led Lily below the ticket hall to a maintenance corridor. A steel door waited at the end.
"Your mother hid the original ledger here," she said.
Lily used the brass key.
Inside was a waterproof case.
She opened it.
