Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Signed the Silence

"Eleanor Price," Adrian read. "She sits on the hotel's charitable foundation."

"She also handled the city's legal response after the fire," Iris said. "I remember her from the hearings. She wouldn't look at the families."

They found Eleanor in a private lounge waiting for her driver. When Iris showed her Rosa's note, Eleanor stopped breathing for a moment.

"Where did you get that?"

"From a woman you told to stop asking questions," Iris said.

Eleanor closed her eyes. "Your mother came to my office three days before the fire. She said the exit chains had already been ordered. I promised an inspection. Then Gideon Voss threatened my career, and I canceled it."

Marisol gripped the back of a chair. "You could have saved them."

"Yes." Eleanor didn't try to soften it. "I could have."

Eleanor opened her handbag and produced a tiny brass locker key. "Rosa gave me this. I hid the original complaint and a copy of the order in a safe-deposit box. I told myself I was protecting the evidence. Then the trial ended, and fear became habit."

"Why tell us now?" Adrian asked.

"Because I watched that woman in gold attack someone who came asking for the truth. I knew I was looking at my own silence, wearing a prettier dress."

Iris wanted to shout. Instead she asked for the bank location and the box number. Eleanor gave both and wrote a signed statement on hotel stationery, carefully recording what she knew and when she knew it. Ava photographed the pages with permission.

As they left, Eleanor caught Iris's sleeve. "There's something your mother said. She knew the doors were wrong, but she kept coming to work because people needed their paychecks."

Iris pulled away. "I know exactly why she came to work."

Ava had uncovered the agenda for an emergency board meeting scheduled at midnight. The board was voting on selling Saint Alder to Voss Holdings.

The building wasn't the only thing on the auction block. The sale agreement included every remaining personnel file and maintenance record.
