Chapter 16 - The Room Behind the Records

The address led investigators to a document-storage facility owned by an Alder subsidiary. Emma petitioned the court to preserve its files. Detectives obtained warrants based on the suspected forgery and Rosa's account.
The search exposed shelves of contracts and old loan books, many bearing familiar names. More importantly, it turned up a locked cabinet of original trust amendments. One document purported to remove me as beneficiary. Its signature page was dated the same week I'd been in the hospital after a car accident.
"I was unconscious for two of those days," I said.
"Then their timeline is going to be hard to defend," Emma replied.
I walked through the mansion with a surveyor the following day. We checked doors, photograph frames, safes, and old wiring, documenting each room as carefully as if it belonged to a museum. The house was not merely a stage for Nathan's success. It contained pencil marks on a pantry wall where Grandmother had recorded my height, tiny paint splashes from my mother's disastrous attempt to renovate the sunroom, and a loose stair rail my grandfather had promised to repair. Those ordinary traces steadied me. A forged deed could put ownership into dispute. It could not rewrite who had lived and loved within these walls.
Nathan came voluntarily to speak with investigators. He admitted that he'd signed authorizations and permitted Martin to access the mansion, believing the lawyer was restructuring business liabilities. He also admitted hiding the affair and handing Vanessa the necklace to satisfy what he described as an attempted extortion.
The confession didn't clean his hands. It gave investigators a map of the dirt.
In the afternoon, Vanessa's attorney contacted Emma. Vanessa wanted immunity consideration in exchange for original recordings and bank records. She said Martin had been using her accounts for years. She also said the anniversary-night confrontation had been staged to make me leave the house.
"Why?" I asked.
Her attorney's reply was short: Martin planned to empty the original records from Eleanor's desk and office while Claire was away.
I remembered the locked front doors, the suitcase, Vanessa's confident smile. I hadn't interrupted their evening by accident. They'd anticipated every step except my leaving through the garden.
