Chapter 17 - The Wedding That Never Happened

Grant's wedding to Nora had been scheduled for Saturday. He had refused to cancel the ceremony publicly, telling the press that his bride needed rest. By Friday night, the ballroom was being decorated again, this time for a charity announcement that would protect the Whitmore brand.

Before going back to the hotel, Nora wrote June's name on a sheet of paper and tucked it inside her coat. It was a small, private act; no cameras, no dramatic vow. She wanted to remember why she was walking into that room. Not for Eli. Not to humiliate Grant. Not even to settle the argument with Frank that would probably last the rest of their lives. She was doing it for the person who had tried to tell the truth and been silenced, and for people whose names were stacked in a dark basement as though their homes were simply assets.

"He needs a stage," Nora said. "Fine. We'll give him one."

Daniel knew an investigative reporter named Olivia Shaw whose career had nearly ended after she challenged the Whitmores. Nora sent her the archive photographs, Vale's footage, and the ledger. Olivia demanded independent verification. Nora gave her the location of the hidden archive and the names of families whose deeds had been forged.

"If this holds up," Olivia said, "it'll blow the company apart."

"It holds up," Nora replied. "But I need you live at the hotel."

Eli stitched his side wound himself under Vale's supervision, complaining just enough to make Tessa roll her eyes. Later, when they were alone, he found Nora at the diner window.

"I don't expect you to choose me," he said.

"That's the first smart thing you've said since you came back."

"I loved you when I left. I love you now. But loving you doesn't give me permission to run your life."

She looked at him, exhausted by how much she wanted to believe. "Then stand beside me tomorrow. Don't stand in front of me."

He nodded. "Beside you."

At midnight Olivia sent a message: AUTHENTICATED. GOING LIVE AT NOON.

Thirty seconds later, another message arrived from Olivia's number.

They have my daughter.
