Chapter 7 - Letters She Never Sent

They hid in Tessa's cousin's closed diner, where the neon OPEN sign buzzed despite the locked front door. Nora spread her mother's letters across a booth. Each one contained some ordinary memory: burned pancakes, a ruined school play, the day Nora learned to ride a bike. Then, tucked between the lines, were numbers.
Nora's birthday letters blurred as she read. In one, June warned her not to spend her whole life trying to be agreeable. In another, she wrote that being brave didn't mean being loud; sometimes it meant asking a question nobody wanted to answer. Nora laughed once, a raw sound that surprised everyone at the table. Her mother had been teaching her how to confront this nightmare long before either of them knew its shape. She folded the pages carefully. The notes weren't just evidence. They were the closest thing to a conversation with June she'd had in years.
"They're account references," Eli said.
"Or phone numbers," Tessa offered.
Nora shook her head. "Mom loved puzzles. She'd make me solve them before I could open birthday gifts."
She circled the first digit of each letter's date. The sequence formed a street address and a storage-unit number. Vale searched it on an old computer behind the counter.
"Storage place near the river," he said. "Paid up through next year."
Eli sat opposite Nora. "You don't have to be the one who opens it."
"My mother died holding this together. I can open a door."
He looked wrecked, which would have mattered more if he hadn't kept lying. "You deserve to hate me."
"I don't have time to hate you properly. I'll schedule it."
Tessa snorted despite her bruised cheek.
A television over the counter switched to the local news. Grant stood behind a podium, eyes red, telling reporters that Nora had suffered a breakdown after an unstable former boyfriend appeared at their party. He showed them a photograph of her with Eli.
"I just want her home," he said, voice thick with rehearsed pain.
Then the station cut to a police bulletin: Detective Marcus Vale was wanted for kidnapping, assault, and murder.

The photograph of the supposed murder victim appeared beneath it. Nora recognized the face immediately.
It was the security guard she'd hit with the flashlight.
