Chapter 11 - The Board Votes

By afternoon, Daniel had notified Pine Hollow, suspended Sloane’s payment authority, and called an emergency board review. Martin Keene, who had supported the sale, called first.
“Sloane says you’re having a breakdown,” Martin said. “She says the grief has become so severe that you’re confusing business records with personal suspicions.”
Daniel almost laughed. “Did she mention the forged medical forms?”
“She says you’re using your son to attack her.”
“My son is seven. He is not attacking anyone.”
Martin fell quiet. “We need evidence, Daniel.”
“I’m gathering it.”
“Then don’t make this a public war before you know what you have.”
Daniel looked through the study window at Oliver, who was drawing a lighthouse beside Rosa at the kitchen table. “It became public the moment she used our foundation to arrange a false medical placement for my child.”
Sloane arrived with a lawyer and polished reports. She called Brightwater payments legitimate, blamed a shared office terminal for the signatures, and described Oliver as fragile and Daniel as overwhelmed.
She never raised her voice. She did not need to. She had built her reputation on sounding reasonable while other people grew upset.
Asha presented the forged recommendation and Dr. Harlan’s denial. Denise traced duplicate invoices; Sloane’s lawyer could not explain the signature Daniel denied making.
The trustees voted to suspend Sloane from all financial authority pending an independent investigation. It was not enough to prove fraud, but it was enough to stop the sale.
As people filed out, Sloane cornered Daniel beside the conference room.
“You’ve destroyed everything we were building.”
“No,” he said. “I finally looked at what you were building.”
“You think Oliver will thank you for turning his life into a scandal?”
“He won’t have to thank me for protecting him.”
Her face tightened. “You should have let me handle it. You have no idea what I’m capable of when I’m cornered.”
“Is that a threat?”
“It’s a warning.”
She walked away, leaving her lawyer to gather the binder. Asha waited until the elevator doors closed before she spoke.
“She’s going to make another move.”
Daniel nodded. “Then we make sure Oliver is never alone with her.”

That evening, the doorbell rang. Two adults in dark coats stood on the porch with a folder marked PINE HOLLOW FAMILY CENTER.
Behind them, a black SUV waited at the curb.
