Chapter 8 - The Neighbor With the Camera

Linda Cross lived beside our house, a retired elementary-school librarian who kept bird feeders in a perfect row. I knew her as the woman who returned misdelivered packages with a sticky note and a smile. I did not know she'd been listening through our adjoining yards.
Grace arranged a call. Linda was nervous at first.
“I don't like being involved in family arguments,” she said. “But that little boy wasn't acting. I heard him yelling for his grandmother. And I saw Vanessa shove your mother away from the back door last Thursday.”
“Did you record it?” Grace asked.
“My porch camera faces the driveway and part of the side path. I saved two clips because I was worried.”
One showed Mom trying to step outside with Owen. Vanessa blocked the gate and grabbed her elbow hard enough to pull her backward. In the second clip Caleb carried a cardboard box out of my office and loaded it into Vanessa's car.
Linda had already given the footage to the responding officer. Grace obtained information about how evidence could be formally preserved and asked Linda to keep the original files untouched.
“I should've knocked sooner,” Linda said.
“I wish someone had,” I replied, then immediately hated how sharp it sounded. “I'm sorry. Thank you for helping now.”
After the call, Mom sat beside me at Tasha's kitchen table.
“There's something else,” she said. “Caleb took your laptop from the study. The one you use for family bills.”
“It's password-protected.”
“He knew your old password. The children’s birthdays.”
I changed every credential I could from a clean device, contacted the bank's fraud department, and requested security locks where available. I told my attorney about accounts Caleb might have accessed without permission.
Then a bank representative called about a wire transfer initiated from our joint account. A substantial sum was scheduled to leave the next morning.
