Chapter 12 - Blood in the Security Room

For one full second, no one moved.

Then Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face did not change.

Claire backed away from him.

Harold whispered, “His birth name is David Mercer. His mother was Elaine Mercer. Richard paid her for years.”

Ethan stared. “Daniel?”

The security chief slowly removed his earpiece.

“My name is Daniel Ruiz.”

“Were you born David Mercer?”

Daniel looked at Harold. “Where did you get that?”

“Rachel.”

Ethan’s voice sharpened. “Answer me.”

Daniel’s jaw worked.

“Yes.”

The room erupted.

Claire swore. Harold stepped back. Two security guards reached toward their belts, uncertain whether their own chief was now the threat.

Daniel raised both hands. “I did not hurt Rachel.”

Ethan’s anger surged. “You’ve been in my house for four years.”

“I know.”

“You held my daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You knew who you were the entire time?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel’s voice broke for the first time. “Because I wanted to know the family my father chose instead of mine.”

Ethan went silent.

Daniel continued. “I came to Cole Meridian looking for proof Richard destroyed my mother. I found something else. Your father was guilty of many things, but the embezzlement case against Martin Vale was real. Claire’s father did steal. And someone has been using that old scandal to move money again.”

Claire stepped forward. “Liar.”

Daniel looked at her. “You know I’m not.”

Ethan held up Rachel’s phone. “Did Rachel know who you were?”

“Yes.”

“Did she trust you?”

Daniel looked down. “Eventually.”

“Then why did she say someone with access to this house was involved?”

“Because someone was.”

“Who?”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the ceiling.

“The smart-house administrator.”

Ethan frowned. “You control that.”

“No. I control security. The automation system is separate.”

Claire suddenly looked toward the hallway.

Daniel continued. “Lighting. locks. climate. camera relays. The administrator can kill feeds, unlock doors, spoof entry logs.”

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

“Who has administrator access?”

Daniel pulled up the system record on his tablet.

Three names appeared.

Ethan Cole.

Daniel Ruiz.

And a third account Ethan had never seen before.

RACHEL C.

Daniel tapped it.

“Someone logged into Rachel’s account tonight.”

Ethan stared at the timestamp.
