Chapter 17 - The Secret on the Tape

Daniel stood so quickly the interview chair tipped over.

Evelyn was upstairs with Noah.

I called her before anyone could stop me.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

We rushed to the pediatric waiting area.

Empty.

A nurse said Evelyn had left ten minutes earlier with Noah.

Daniel swore.

Alvarez put out an alert.

I sat down because my legs stopped working.

"Why would Evelyn hurt my pregnancy?"

Patricia's voice came through Alvarez's speakerphone.

"Because Richard told her Daniel would inherit control of the family company if he had a child inside the marriage. Evelyn believed a new baby would make Daniel stay tied to Richard forever."

"That's insane."

"Families like ours make insanity look like planning."

Alvarez asked for proof.

Patricia said she had none.

Then Daniel remembered Evelyn had once had access to his old apartment through a storage locker key.

I wanted to reject the idea.

Evelyn had saved me at the gas station. She had given police the flash drive. She had risked everything to expose Richard.

But she had also hidden a child for five years.

Everyone in this family was capable of two opposite truths at the same time.

My phone vibrated.

A text from Evelyn.

COME ALONE TO THE PUBLIC GARDEN. I CAN PROVE I DIDN'T HURT YOUR BABY.

Daniel saw it.

"No."

"We bring Alvarez nearby."

"Claire, every time someone says come alone, someone gets kidnapped."

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

Two hours later, I sat on a bench near the lagoon while plainclothes officers watched from a distance.

Evelyn approached alone.

No Noah.

She handed me a laboratory report.

"I stole this from Richard's office six years ago," she said.

The report was from the same private lab Daniel had used after my miscarriage.

Sample: prenatal supplement capsules.

Result: contaminated with a prescription anticoagulant.

Requested by: D. Bennett.

My eyes rose to hers.

"Daniel ordered the test."

"Yes."

"Who contaminated the pills?"

Evelyn's voice broke.

"His father did."

Evelyn had no proof beyond the lab report.

Then she pulled out a tiny digital recorder.

"This does."

Six years earlier, while gathering evidence against Richard, she had secretly recorded dozens of conversations in his office. One file included Richard speaking to a company doctor.

Evelyn pressed play.

Richard's voice crackled through the speaker.

"If Daniel has a child with that Mercer girl before she signs, every lawyer in Massachusetts will smell blood. Delay it. I don't care how."

Another man answered, "You're asking me to interfere with a pregnancy."

Richard said, "I'm asking you to solve a timing problem."

I stopped the recording.

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.

Daniel arrived with Alvarez despite my request that he wait.

I handed him the recorder.

He listened.

Then he sat on the wet park bench and cried.

Not quietly.

Not with dignity.

He bent forward and covered his face.

"I should've told you about the pills," he said. "I should've gone to the police."

"Yes."

"I was afraid he'd destroy you."

"So you let me think my body failed."

He nodded.

There was no excuse big enough.

Alvarez took the recorder as evidence.

"This changes the case," he said.

Evelyn looked toward the trees.

"It also makes Richard dangerous even from custody."

"Where's Noah?" Daniel asked.

"With federal agents. I moved him because someone tried to access his school file this morning."

Alvarez's phone rang.

He listened, then looked at us.

Richard Bennett had collapsed during processing.

He was being taken to the hospital under guard.

Daniel's expression tightened.

"Is he dying?"

"Maybe."

An hour later, a hospital security alert went out.

The ambulance carrying Richard had never arrived.

The driver was found unconscious in a service road.

Richard Bennett was gone.
