Chapter 17 - Beneath the Gravestone

They returned to the cemetery just before dawn.

Rain had stopped, but fog lay low across the ground.

Claire stood again before NICHOLAS MORETTI.

The damaged corner from the sniper’s bullet remained.

“It started here,” she whispered.

Nathan stood beside her. “Maybe it ends here.”

Thomas led them to a bronze lantern bolted beside the grave.

He inserted the brass key into the base.

A hidden latch clicked.

The entire flower platform shifted aside, revealing a narrow steel compartment under the stone.

Claire stared at her father.

“You hid evidence under my husband’s grave?”

“Vincent designed the vault years ago. He believed no one searches a grave twice.”

Nathan pulled out three waterproof cases.

Ledgers. Drives. Signed agreements.

Enough to destroy the Circle.

Claire picked up one binder.

Names filled every page.

Judges. CEOs. Police commanders. Union leaders. Lobbyists.

Then she saw Detective Pike.

Beside his name was a column labeled ENFORCEMENT.

Nathan said, “This goes to Torres.”

A voice came from the fog.

“No, it doesn’t.”

Pike stepped between two mausoleums with a gun aimed at Claire.

Six men appeared behind him.

Thomas raised his hands slowly.

Pike smiled.

“Mr. Bennett. Nicholas. Mrs. Moretti.”

Claire held the binder against her chest.

“You shot at me here yesterday.”

“I missed on purpose.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

Pike continued. “We needed Nicholas to lead us to the archive.”

Thomas whispered, “You used Raymond.”

“We used everyone.”

Pike motioned with the gun.

“Put the cases down.”

Nathan glanced at Claire.

She knew that look.

He was calculating.

Claire looked toward the lantern.

Inside the glass, beneath the candle, was a tiny red light.

Recording.

Thomas had activated it.

Claire smiled.

Pike noticed.

“What?”

She said, “You talk too much.”

Sirens erupted beyond the cemetery gates.

Pike’s face changed.

Then one of his men grabbed Claire from behind and pressed a gun to her neck.
