Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room

Violet was conscious when they arrived at County General. She was frightened, nauseated, and exhausted, but she could speak. The emergency physician told Elena that tests and observation would guide treatment; nobody yet knew what the syringe had held. Nora insisted on staying where she could see her twin.

Paul arrived with Officer Dana Brooks and took a seat outside the room. Elena faced him across a vending machine humming in the empty hall.

“Why didn't you take the girls when you left?” he asked.

Elena's eyes filled. “Because Grant had a judge's temporary custody order and men following me. I tried going back once. He showed me a picture of Nora asleep and said he could make sure I never saw her wake up again.”

“Who helped him?”

“I don't know everybody. But I know his accountant paid Bellwether.”

Dana brought over a tablet. She had checked the camera at the station. The photographed threat could have come from a vehicle parked along the side fence, outside the camera's clear view. Someone had been close enough to watch them, and close enough to leave quickly.

Inside the room Violet tugged on her mother's sleeve. “It tasted like oranges,” she whispered. “The bad stuff.”

Elena crouched. “You can tell us anything.”

“Daddy said if I told, Nora would have to go next time.”

Nora's face turned white. “I heard him tell the phone man that I was the control.”

Paul looked at Dana. No child should have to know that word, let alone fear it.

For half an hour Nora had sat beside Violet's bed, counting each green pulse on the monitor. 'Did you get scared when you were little?' she'd asked Paul. He told her about getting lost at the county fair and finding his brother standing on a picnic table calling his name. 'Did he find you?' she asked. 'Every time,' Paul said, before he realized how much the answer hurt.

The nurse returned holding a small paper envelope. “This was taped under Violet's sneaker insole. She said you should have it.”

Paul unfolded a photograph of three little girls wearing paper crowns in a bright clinic waiting room. Nora and Violet were two of them. The third had dark curls and a gap between her front teeth.
