Chapter 12 - The Son Who Came Back

Mark walked into the house like a man returning to the scene of a fire he started.
Ethan followed two steps behind him.
Claire met them in the hallway.
“You left the hospital?”
Mark shrugged. “They discharged me.”
“With an investigator?”
“Outside.”
Claire looked through the window.
An unmarked car sat across the street.
Ethan walked past them toward the kitchen.
Mark called after him.
“Ethan.”
Ethan stopped but did not turn.
“I said I’m sorry.”
“You said words.”
“I can pay you back.”
“With what?”
Mark had no answer.
Ethan turned.
“You stole from the charity. Dad stole from me to protect you. Mom lied. Claire comes home and suddenly everybody wants to tell the truth like that fixes anything.”
“It doesn’t,” Claire said.
Ethan looked at her.
“Then what does?”
“Consequences.”
The word changed the room.
Mark lowered his eyes.
Linda came down the stairs.
When Mark saw her, his face broke.
“Mom.”
She crossed the hallway and hugged him.
For a second, he was no longer the brother who had stolen and run.
He was a frightened son.
Ethan watched with a clenched jaw.
Claire understood his anger because some part of her shared it.
Love could look unfair when the person receiving it had caused the damage.
Mark pulled away.
“I need to show you something.”
He sat at the kitchen table and placed a small notebook on the wood.
“Walter kept a paper ledger because he didn’t trust digital records.”
Claire opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Initials.
Some entries were coded.
Some were not.
Judges.
Contractors.
A bank vice president.
Two city officials.
Three executives at Harbor Light.
And Robert Bennett.
Claire found Linda’s name.
Beside it: OFFER REFUSED.
She looked up.
Linda exhaled.
Then Claire saw another name.
MARK BENNETT.
Beside it: PAID — 87K / RECOVER FILES.
Ethan read over her shoulder.
“You didn’t steal eighty-seven thousand.”
Mark looked ashamed.
“I took it from Walter’s cash reserve after I copied the files.”
“So still theft.”
“Yes.”
“But the ledger says he paid you.”
“He rewrote the entry after I disappeared. Made it look like I was hired.”
Claire understood.
“Insurance.”
“Exactly. If authorities found the books, I became part of the conspiracy.”
Ethan sat down slowly.
Mark opened to the last page.
“There’s one more thing.”
A single entry had been written three days earlier.
C. BENNETT — RETURN HOME / CONTAIN.
Claire’s skin went cold.
“They knew I was coming.”
Mark nodded.
Ethan looked toward the windows.
“Who told them?”
Nobody answered.
Then the landline rang.
Linda picked it up.
A distorted voice said, “Check the garage.”
The line disconnected.
Claire ran.
The garage door was open.
Her military duffel bag sat in the middle of the floor.
May you like
It had been cut open.
And every document she brought home was gone.
