Chapter 1 - The Scan

“Mom… I’m scared.”

Those were the first words my daughter said after the emergency-room doors slammed shut behind us.

Nia was sixteen, stubborn, funny, and normally impossible to scare. That night she was curled on a narrow hospital bed with tears running into her ears, one hand locked around mine so hard my fingers were turning numb.

Three hours earlier, she had collapsed on the kitchen floor.

No warning. No fever. No crash. Just a glass slipping from her hand and her knees folding under her like somebody had cut the strings.

Dr. Marcus Hale moved a handheld scanner slowly across her abdomen. He was calm in the way experienced doctors are calm when everyone else is falling apart.

“Breathe normally for me, Nia.”

“I’m trying.”

The monitor beeped. Nia flinched.

I brushed the hair off her forehead. “You’re okay, baby.”

She looked at me with wet, furious eyes. “Don’t say that if you don’t know.”

That broke something inside me.

Dr. Hale stopped moving the scanner.

Not gradually. Completely.

His eyes narrowed at the screen.

“Hold on,” he said.

I leaned forward. “What?”

He didn’t answer.

He adjusted the angle and scanned again. His face changed just enough for me to notice. His jaw tightened. Then he looked at the nurse.

“Keisha, get me her labs again.”

The nurse crossed the room fast.

I heard paper. I heard keys clicking. I heard my own breathing.

“What did you find?” I asked.

Dr. Hale stared at the screen for another two seconds, then looked directly at me.

“I need to call someone right now.”

“Who?”

He reached for the phone.

His voice dropped.

“Poison Control.”

For one stupid second, I thought I had misunderstood him.

Then Nia whispered, “Mom?”

Dr. Hale held up one hand, still looking at the monitor.

“And hospital security,” he added.

The room went cold.

I stood so fast my chair hit the wall.

“Why security?”

He turned toward me.

“Because whatever is happening to your daughter didn’t start tonight.”

May you like

Then he looked at Nia’s chart again.

“And I don’t think it was an accident.”
