Chapter 10 - The Company Was the Trap

By two in the morning, the wedding reception had officially ended.

Nobody threw rice.

Nobody cut the second cake.

Nobody danced under the sparklers I had spent three weeks arguing about.

Instead, I sat in a hotel conference room with police, my father, my best friend, my husband, and the woman he had been sleeping with.

It should have felt unreal.

It felt painfully specific.

The detective placed copies of the recovered records across the table.

Harbor Ridge wasn't just over budget.

It was poisoned.

Inflated invoices. Shell contractors. Fake change orders. Millions routed through companies tied to Gavin and one of Lorraine's longtime business partners.

Marcus stared at the documents.

"I signed some of these approvals."

Serena nodded. "Because your mother told you they were temporary vendor restructures."

"You knew?"

"Not at first. When I figured it out, I copied everything."

Marcus looked at her. "Why didn't you come to me?"

Serena laughed bitterly. "I did. You told me not to make accusations without proof. Then we slept together that night. Remember?"

I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.

Everyone went silent.

"I need air."

Marcus followed me into the hall.

"Danielle."

I kept walking.

"Please."

I stopped.

"Do you understand that every new piece of information makes the old lie bigger?"

"Yes."

"You cheated on me while your company was stealing from itself, while your mother was targeting my trust, while your attorney was forging my signature."

"I didn't know about the forgery."

"But you knew enough to lie."

He nodded once.

That hurt more than another excuse.

"Why Serena?"

His eyes closed.

"Because she knew how bad the company was. I was terrified. You were planning the wedding. You believed in me. With Serena, I didn't have to pretend I had everything under control."

"So you rewarded my trust by giving someone else your honesty."

He had no defense.

Good.

I walked toward the windows overlooking the city.

"I'm filing for an annulment in the morning."

His face crumpled.

"Dani—"

"Don't call me that."

He stopped.

Behind us, the conference-room door opened.

The detective stepped out.

"Mrs. Carter—"

"Danielle is fine."

"Danielle, we found one more file on the flash drive. It's a video."

He looked at Marcus.

"It was recorded in Lorraine Hale's office yesterday."

Marcus went pale.

"What's on it?"

May you like

The detective answered carefully.

"Your mother discussing what should happen if Danielle discovered the affair before the transfer cleared."
