Chapter 11 - The Chart

Karen Doyle agreed to meet Detective Ortiz at the station.

Claire was not present for the formal interview, but by evening Ortiz returned with news.

Karen had worked as Keller’s office manager for nine years.

Three days before Noah was born, Diane called the office and asked Keller to “start documenting concerns.”

There were no concerns in Claire’s chart at the time.

So Keller added them.

Not blatant lies.

Careful phrases.

“Patient appears anxious.”

“Spouse reports emotional volatility.”

“Family expresses concern regarding judgment.”

Claire remembered appointments where Keller barely looked up from his computer.

Now she knew what he had been typing.

Karen had become suspicious when Keller asked her to backdate a note stating that Claire had discussed “fear of harming herself or infant.”

Claire stood so fast the chair scraped the floor.

“I never said that.”

Ortiz nodded. “Karen says you didn’t.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

Claire felt anger replace fear so completely that it almost steadied her.

“They were going to take my baby using a fake medical record.”

“We’re still establishing exactly what the plan was,” Ortiz said.

Claire pointed toward the baby monitor sitting in an evidence bag on the table.

“They said it.”

“Yes.”

“Then establish faster.”

The room went quiet.

Claire expected Ortiz to tell her to calm down.

Instead, the detective said, “You’re right.”

That nearly broke her.

Ortiz continued. “There’s another problem.”

Of course there was.

Keller’s office server had been accessed remotely at 2:14 that afternoon.

Several entries in Claire’s chart were deleted.

Karen’s login had been used.

Karen was sitting with police at the time.

“Can they recover them?” Claire asked.

“Probably. But whoever logged in knew exactly which records mattered.”

Rachel leaned forward. “Grant?”

“Possibly.”

“Diane?”

“Possibly.”

“Keller?”

Ortiz’s expression answered before she did.

Then Claire’s phone vibrated on the table.

An email had arrived from an address she did not know.

Subject line: THOMAS MASON.

Claire opened it.

There was no message.

Only one attachment.

A photograph of a newspaper clipping from twenty-three years earlier.

The headline read:

LOCAL FATHER HOSPITALIZED AFTER CUSTODY DISPUTE.
