Chapter 7 - The First Hearing

By morning, the school had been warned that neither Ethan nor Margaret could remove Sophie without further authorization. Dad stayed with her while I was discharged with pain medication and strict instructions to rest.

Instead, I went straight to court.

Tessa had warned me the emergency hearing would be ugly. She hadn't warned me Ethan would wear the blue tie Sophie had chosen for Father's Day.

Margaret sat behind him, hands folded, every inch the concerned grandmother.

Ethan's attorney argued that my injuries resulted from an accidental fall and that I was using Sophie to punish her father for a disagreement about money.

"My client wants family counseling," the attorney said. "He wants everyone safe."

I nearly laughed.

Tessa stood and presented the medical photographs, my recorded statement, the deputy's incident report, and Ethan's threatening messages.

"This is not a disagreement about money," she said. "It's a physical assault accompanied by attempts to silence an eyewitness."

The judge asked Ethan whether he had sent a picture of Sophie's school.

He looked down. "I was worried about my daughter."

"You sent it to her injured mother," the judge said. "What response were you trying to obtain?"

Ethan did not answer.

When I spoke, my voice shook at first.

"He told me I would lose my child if I told the truth. That's why I'm here. Not because I'm certain I'll win. Because Sophie needs to see that telling the truth is worth the risk."

The judge granted a temporary protective order prohibiting Ethan from contacting or approaching me, and ordered that any contact with Sophie be supervised pending a full custody hearing. Margaret was not awarded access to her.

It was not a final victory. It was a locked door where no door had existed before.

In the hallway, Margaret stepped into my path before a deputy directed her away.

"Your grandmother would be ashamed," she murmured.

"My grandmother taught me how to recognize a thief," I replied.

Margaret's polite smile disappeared.

"You have no idea what your husband signed to keep this family alive."

I watched her leave and realized she wasn't merely protecting Ethan.

She was afraid he had put both of them in debt to someone who would not wait until Friday.
