Chapter 13 - Union Station

Claire did not tell Daniel or Martin where she was going.

She took Evan.

At Union Station, they found the old baggage storage office closed for renovation. An elderly supervisor named Mr. Reynolds listened to Claire’s story, examined the tiny key, then disappeared into the back.

Ten minutes later, he returned carrying a dust-covered metal box.

“This should’ve been cleared out years ago,” he said. “But the account was prepaid for fifty years.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“By Thomas Bennett?”

Mr. Reynolds nodded.

The key opened the box.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten ledger.

A cassette tape.

And a photograph of Thomas Bennett standing beside Eleanor Whitmore and a much younger Martin Shaw.

On the back, Thomas had written:

IF I DIE, ELEANOR DID NOT BETRAY ME. MARTIN DID.

Claire stared at the words.

Evan opened the ledger.

Page after page listed payments, dates, shell companies, and initials.

M.S. appeared dozens of times.

But there were other initials.

R.H.

Claire felt cold.

“Robert Hale?”

Evan frowned. “Officer Hale’s father was Robert Hale. Former detective.”

Claire remembered Daniel saying Hale worked private security.

A family business, apparently.

The cassette tape was harder. They found an old electronics shop nearby that could play it.

Thomas’s voice crackled through the speaker.

“If you are hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”

Claire covered her mouth.

She had not heard her father’s voice in twenty years.

The tape continued.

“Martin Shaw has been siphoning money from Whitmore Holdings, but he is not acting alone. Robert Hale is protecting him inside law enforcement. I believe Daniel’s father, Richard Whitmore, discovered part of the scheme and threatened to expose them.”

Claire looked at Evan.

Richard Whitmore had died of a heart attack fifteen years earlier.

Thomas’s voice dropped.

“I also believe Eleanor knows more than she has admitted.”

The tape clicked.

Then one final sentence came through.

“If anything happens to me, the person who can prove everything is Eleanor.”

Claire’s phone buzzed.

A photo message from Daniel.

Rosa was tied to a chair in the Whitmore kitchen.

Martin stood behind her.

The text read:
