Chapter 16 - The Night Before

The video showed me shoving Daniel's shoulder in his study. It lasted six seconds. Evelyn claimed it proved I was violent and unstable. The clip circulated before Monica could get the full footage.
I remembered that night clearly. Daniel had grabbed my wrist and blocked the door after I asked about withdrawals from our joint savings account. I pushed past him when he wouldn't let me leave. My cheek struck the edge of a cabinet. The next morning, he told everyone I'd walked into a door.
“Do you have proof?” Monica asked gently.
“I have my memory. And I may have a photograph from that night.”
I searched my phone. There it was: a picture I'd taken of the swelling under my eye, sent to a private draft message I never delivered. The timestamp mattered. So did the bruise. But the photo alone couldn't show exactly how it happened.
Nora came forward again. She'd heard me say, “Move away from the door,” and heard Daniel answer, “You're not leaving until we settle this.” She hadn't seen the push. Monica made certain her statement reflected what she'd actually witnessed, nothing more.
I called Daniel. “You know why I pushed you.”
“I know,” he said after a long silence.
“Then say it.”
He breathed hard. “I stopped you from leaving.”
“Will you tell the court?”
“Yes.”
I didn't thank him. Basic truth wasn't a gift.
Dad sat with me that night while Lily slept. “I keep trying to find a way to fix this for you,” he said.
“You can't fix all of it.”
“I know. I'm learning.”
He gave me Mom's old tool pouch, repaired at the seams. Inside was a note she'd once written him: Don't build a life that somebody else can lock you out of.
I laughed through tears. “She was always one step ahead of us.”
The next morning, the clinic's independent reviewer called Monica. The duplicate consent forms were not the only irregularity.

The review found that the foundation had billed for a procedure that never appeared in Lily's medical record. Somebody had charged Walter for a secret he could use, whether or not the secret was true.
