Chapter 19 - The Night Everything Changed

Emergency lights switched on within seconds. Nurses didn't panic. They moved.
"Labor and delivery is this way," one said, steering Claire toward a wheelchair. "Backup generators are running. Keep breathing with me."
I followed until a security officer stepped in front of me. "Sir, we need to verify your identification."
"I'm her husband."
"I know. We were warned somebody might impersonate a family member."
It took thirty miserable seconds to clear the check. Claire reached for me as soon as I entered the room.
"Don't leave," she said.
"I'm right here."
Her labor moved quickly. The doctor explained that our daughter was arriving early and a neonatal team would be ready. I held Claire's hand through every contraction. She cursed me twice, apologized neither time, and told me to stop apologizing for things I couldn't fix.
"You can do this," I told her.
"I know I can," she snapped. "You just keep holding on."
At 11:14 p.m., our daughter was born, tiny and furious, with a cry that made the room feel enormous. The neonatal team examined her and took her for monitoring because she was premature. A nurse let Claire touch her little hand first.
"She's beautiful," Claire whispered.
"She's loud," I said, crying openly. "Definitely ours."
We named her Evelyn Rose. It was not forgiveness for the past. It was a promise that the past would not decide what kind of family we became.
Vega called after midnight. Celia Voss had been arrested at a private airport, trying to board a charter flight. Officers recovered passports, cash, and a drive containing archived client payments.
"Martin's talking," Vega said. "There may be more arrests."
"Good," I answered. "Because there are more families."
Claire listened from the hospital bed. "Tell her we're willing to testify."
I did. After the call, Claire looked toward the neonatal unit through the glass.
"Do you think she'll be okay?"
I squeezed her hand. "The doctors say she's stable. We'll take it one day at a time."

A nurse appeared at the doorway, smiling cautiously.
"There's someone asking for Claire," she said. "He flew in from Denver."
