Chapter 9 - The Money Starts Moving

Natalie filed an emergency petition before the courthouse closed for the holiday. She asked the judge to preserve the trust’s remaining assets, restrain transfers connected to the eleven-point-four-million-dollar wire, and appoint a neutral temporary fiduciary while the records were reviewed. She did not promise that the money would come back quickly. She told me recovery could take months, maybe years, and that an offshore transfer made everything harder.

“Then we do it one step at a time,” I said.

The bank’s compliance team confirmed that part of the transfer was still sitting in a correspondent account because the receiving institution had requested additional documentation. The money was not safe, but it had not all disappeared. A court preservation order could stop the next movement if it arrived in time.

Then the case became public. A local business blog posted that Garrick Bennett was facing “questions about a family trust.” Someone sent the link to my work email with a message: Must be nice to steal your own mother’s house and then play victim.

I closed the browser. My manager, Denise, shut the office door.

“You don’t owe me your family history,” she said. “But if you need time for court, tell me. We’ll work around it.”

I thanked her, then cried in the break room, tired of staying composed while other people rewrote the truth.

That afternoon, a financial crimes investigator named Agent Laura Kim called Natalie. The transfer had triggered a review because the destination account was tied to a company that had already appeared in another suspicious transaction report. Agent Kim wanted copies of the original trust instrument and the forged release. She was careful with her language: an investigation was not a verdict, and no one was promising an arrest.

Still, when Natalie called me afterward, I heard something I hadn’t heard in days.

Hope.

Then she told me the bank had identified an attempted second transfer—this one initiated after the preservation request was filed.

Someone had known the money was being watched and had tried to move it anyway.
