Chapter 17 - The Price of a Secret

The clinic discovered that North Harbor had issued an invoice for fabricated donor services and attached altered paperwork as proof. Its records did not establish the medical allegation Walter had made about Lily. Monica urged us not to repeat any more claims until the review was complete.
I felt something loosen in my chest. Lily was still Lily yesterday, today, forever. But learning that Walter had purchased a false story to frighten us into silence showed me how thoroughly he confused money with power.
Investigators interviewed the clinic's former billing manager. She admitted she had copied signatures and created an invoice at the request of a Harrington Foundation contractor. She said she had never touched patient care records. Her account would need corroboration, but the audit logs supported key dates.
Daniel came to Dad's porch with a stack of children's books Lily had left behind. Monica had arranged the exchange. He stayed on the path and didn't demand to see her.
“I told Ellis everything about North Harbor,” he said.
“Good.”
“I don't know who I am without my family name.”
“Then you'll have to find out.”
He looked at the books. “Does she ask for me?”
“Sometimes. I answer her honestly in words she can understand.”
His eyes filled. I felt sad for the boy he'd been, trained to mistake obedience for love. I did not mistake sadness for a reason to return.
A week later Walter's attorney proposed a confidential settlement. The offer would restore a portion of the trust assets and pay Dad substantial compensation, but it required us to withdraw several civil claims and remain silent about the business scheme. Separate criminal investigations would continue regardless of any private agreement.
Dad read the proposal slowly. “I could reopen the workshop. Set you and Lily up for life.”
“And Nora?” I asked. “And the people they paid to keep quiet?”
He folded the papers. “I was thinking the same thing.”
Then Monica turned to the final page. It listed one beneficiary who had never appeared in the documents we'd seen.
