Chapter 13 - Thirty Days

The next morning, our wedding flowers were still being cleared from the ballroom while Ethan and I sat in a hospital conference room.

We had been married less than fourteen hours.

And already our marriage had become evidence.

Richard explained the trust.

Ethan’s grandfather had created a control mechanism decades earlier. When Ethan married, a thirty-day stability period began. If the marriage remained intact and no legal incapacity or fraud finding occurred, Ethan’s voting rights expanded.

Vivian would lose practical control.

That was the missing motive.

Meridian was only half of it.

I looked at Ethan.

“Your mother wanted my company and wanted to stop you from getting hers.”

He looked devastated.

Richard nodded.

“She could solve both problems if Claire appeared unstable and the marriage collapsed.”

Ethan said, “And the contingency folder about me?”

Richard looked away.

“If you rejected the family plan, she was prepared to claim you had breached fiduciary duties by putting your marriage ahead of the family company.”

I could hardly believe it.

“She built a trap for both of us.”

“Yes.”

A knock sounded.

Officer Brooks entered.

“The lab has preliminary results.”

My pulse jumped.

She closed the door.

“The champagne sample contained a benzodiazepine consistent with Mr. Whitmore’s blood screen.”

Ethan sat down.

I felt no triumph.

Only a strange, cold sadness.

It was real.

No misunderstanding left.

No explanation that could save the night.

Brooks continued. “We have a warrant request in progress for Mrs. Whitmore’s residence and family office. We’re also looking for Martin Cole.”

“Vivian?” I asked.

“Her car was found in a parking garage.”

“Empty?”

“Yes.”

Ethan rubbed both hands over his face.

Brooks looked at me.

“Someone used Mrs. Whitmore’s access badge at the family office at 1:06 a.m.”

Richard checked the clock.

“She’s destroying documents.”

Brooks nodded. “We have units on the way.”

I stood.

“I want the safe deposit box opened now.”

“Claire,” Ethan said.

“If Vivian is cleaning the office, that box may be the only copy.”

Richard gave me the bank details.

Officer Brooks made a call.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A video.

I opened it.

Vivian sat in a dark room.

Her hair was no longer perfect. Her face looked hard and exhausted.

She stared directly into the camera.

“Claire,” she said, “if you want to understand what really happened, stop listening to Richard.”

Ethan leaned closer.

Vivian continued.

“He has been using you from the beginning.”

Richard whispered, “Don’t believe her.”

The video ended with one final sentence.

“Ask your husband what he signed three weeks before he proposed.”
