Chapter 17 - The Video Everyone Believed

The edited video began with me standing beside my chair and ended with Evelyn opening the folder. It omitted Celia's comment about the bathroom and cut away before Evelyn told me she believed my signature had been forged.
Captions called me a greedy daughter-in-law trying to take control of a charity.
I watched strangers debate my marriage, my face, my dress, and whether I deserved a seat at the table. For a few minutes I forgot how to breathe.
Evelyn found me on the porch. “Put down the phone.”
“They think I used you.”
“People who don't know us are repeating a lie. That doesn't make it true.”
“It's ruining everything.”
“Then we handle what we can prove.”
Andre, the waiter, called Grace before midnight. His employer had preserved a complete recording from the banquet's security system. He had also written a statement describing the order to move my place setting.
“I heard the event director say Celia wanted Nia out before the trustees' toast,” he told Grace. “She said the folder had to change hands without a scene.”
“Why didn't you say something that night?” I asked.
“I needed the job,” he answered. “Then I watched them blame you for what they did. I couldn't keep quiet.”
His honesty was simple and devastating. We had all been choosing between what was safe and what was right, and not everyone had the same margin for error.
Grace sent the full footage and a request to preserve related records to the investigators. She warned us not to release family data or speculate publicly. Evelyn issued a brief statement: the video was incomplete; the foundation's records were under independent review; affected families deserved privacy and care.
The next morning, the full gala footage aired on a local station after its news team independently verified it. Viewers heard Evelyn's opening question without the cut. They saw Celia reach for the folder. They heard me say I hadn't signed the document.
Then the reporter mentioned a new development: federal investigators had served records requests at foundation headquarters.

As the board members entered their emergency meeting, Celia walked through the lobby smiling.
She was carrying another black folder.
