Chapter 18 - The Vote

The boardroom had twelve chairs. Celia had arranged eleven folders and left one place empty, a familiar tactic. Evelyn arrived with Grace and sat in the vacant chair before anyone could object.

“I hear my removal is on the agenda,” she said.

Celia smiled. “We're concerned about your health and the damage to the foundation.”

“My health is excellent. Your bookkeeping appears less robust.”

I attended only the portion of the meeting where witnesses were invited to speak. Grace had advised me to bring documents, not a speech about betrayal. I carried a timeline showing when I resigned, where I had traveled on the date of the forged signature, and what records had been preserved.

Celia studied the papers. “You have no idea how institutions work.”

“I know the date my father was buried,” I said. “Your transfer authorization says I signed it that afternoon.”

A board member asked for corroboration. I supplied travel receipts and the funeral program. My attorney provided a statement from the notary whose stamp appeared on the document; she denied witnessing my signature.

Celia looked toward Marcus's empty chair. “My son can explain.”

“He has given his explanation to investigators,” Grace said.

Franklin Shaw presented his account freeze notices and explained the attempted trustee replacement. Simone summarized the grant denials and verified medical referrals. Andre's original footage established who ordered my seating change. None of this was a verdict, but it was enough to break Celia's control of the room.

The board voted to suspend Celia and Victor from foundation operations pending independent investigation, preserve all records, and appoint temporary leadership with outside oversight. Evelyn's removal failed by nine votes to three.

Celia stood so abruptly her chair toppled.

“You think you can run this place without me?”

Evelyn answered evenly. “I built it before you had a key.”

Celia stared at me, hatred stripped of polish. “Your father should have stayed out of it.”

The room went still.

Grace looked up from her notes. “Would you like to clarify that statement?”

May you like

Celia sat down without another word.

Outside the boardroom, two investigators waited to speak with her.
