Chapter 17 - Take Off the Lie

The room fell quiet when I entered. Vanessa rested both hands on her rounded stomach, a performance so practiced it might have fooled me again if I hadn't seen the tape.
Cole rose beside her. "Daniel, we're prepared to offer a private settlement. Resign as foundation trustee and stop defaming your fiancee. We all go home without further damage."
"You tried to take $125 million," I said. "And you're offering me a settlement?"
"Careful," Blake warned.
My attorney handed each trustee a packet. Inside were the bank's fraud notice, independent records from Harbor Seven, statements from Nora and Dr. Larkin, and photographs from the gala suite. None of it depended on Ellie's word alone.
Evelyn turned toward Vanessa. "For the sake of this family, tell us the truth."
Vanessa looked down. For a heartbeat I saw exhaustion beneath her makeup.
"Daniel wanted a child," she said. "He wanted the perfect family."
"I wanted honesty," I answered. "You never gave me a chance to know you."
She stood sharply. "You don't know what it's like to be disposable. Blake promised I'd have a real life when this was over."
"So you helped steal relief money?"
"I didn't know about the broken equipment. I swear I didn't."
Blake pushed his chair back. "Vanessa, sit down."
She looked at him with something like hatred. "You told me no one would get hurt. Then you had those men chase the little girl."
Cole stepped forward. "She is emotionally distressed. We should end this meeting."
"No," Vanessa said. "I'm tired of being your excuse."
Her hands went to the fastening hidden beneath her dress. In front of the entire board, she unhooked the padded prosthetic belly and set it on the polished table.
There was no applause. No triumph. Just the awful silence of people watching a lie become an object.
"I'm not pregnant," she said. "I never was."
Evelyn made a broken sound. One trustee lowered his face into his hands.
Blake's expression hardened. "You've just ruined yourself."
"You ruined me months ago," Vanessa replied.
She reached into her purse and took out a phone.

"I recorded our last meeting," she said. "Including the part where Blake told Cole what to do about Aaron Bennett."
Before she could hand it over, the boardroom lights went out.
