Chapter 15 - The School Gate

"Lucy isn't at school," I told Mrs. Hart on the phone. "She's with Dana's sister. Celia has no guardianship order."
"We haven't released any child to her," the principal said. "I wanted to alert you immediately."
Celia had driven to the school while her own lawyer remained at the courthouse collecting documents. She had apparently expected a favorable ruling and planned to act before anyone could challenge her.
When Mrs. Hart refused the pickup request, Celia caused such a disturbance that school security escorted her off the property. A report was made. I forwarded it to Lila, adding one more page to a file that already seemed too heavy for a human life.
Outside the courthouse, Ben caught up with me.
"Mom says you're turning everyone against her."
"You heard the judge. You saw the video. What do you say?"
He looked at his shoes. "I say she needs help."
"And Lucy needs safety. Not excuses."
"I know."
I asked him whether he'd known about Celia's plan to go to the school. He shook his head and showed me his phone. Celia had sent him a message an hour earlier: I'M GETTING MY GIRL. NO ONE WILL STOP ME.
"You should have warned me," I said.
"I was testifying. I didn't see it until now."
For once, his explanation fit the facts. It changed nothing about how close we had come to another frightening scene.
Over the next week, Lila filed for temporary parenting arrangements as part of our separation case. Ben agreed that Lucy should live with me while he began counseling and that his contact with her would take place in a structured setting at first. A family court judge would review the arrangement. Celia was not included in the approved visits.
I found a small rental duplex fifteen minutes from Lucy's school. It had a cracked driveway, a lopsided mailbox, and a lemon tree that looked halfway to giving up. Lucy loved it immediately.
"We can put a bird feeder here," she said, pointing to the kitchen window.
"We can."
For the first time since Sunday, I felt like our lives might become ours again.
Then Lila called. Her voice was clipped and careful.
"Celia's attorney has withdrawn from representing her in the guardianship matter. But Celia has filed a new sworn complaint against you."

"What does she say now?"
"That you're the one threatening to abduct Lucy. And she's attached an audio recording."
