Chapter 11 - The Bank

They reached Caldwell & Mercer Bank at 2:18 a.m.

A security supervisor met them in the marble lobby wearing a jacket over his uniform. Daniel had spent the drive making calls that Eleanor did not ask him to explain.

Richard Mercer was already there.

He stood near the private elevator in a navy suit, silver hair perfectly combed, as if midnight emergencies were part of his schedule.

When he saw Eleanor, his face changed for half a second.

Then the banker returned.

“Eleanor.”

“Richard.”

His eyes moved to Grant, then Harrison, then Sloan.

He stopped on his daughter.

“What did you tell them?”

Sloan’s shoulders stiffened. “Enough.”

Richard’s mouth flattened.

Daniel stepped forward. “Access to B-214 is suspended pending review.”

Richard smiled. “You don’t have authority to suspend anything.”

“I do when the beneficial trustee is standing beside me and alleges fraudulent access.”

The smile disappeared.

Eleanor studied the man who had eaten at her table for thirty years.

“Did you let Thomas die?”

Harrison whispered, “Mom.”

But she did not look away.

Richard answered slowly. “No.”

“Did you call an ambulance?”

“No.”

“Did you know he needed one?”

Richard’s eyes flickered.

“That is not the same question.”

Grant stepped forward, but Harrison caught his arm.

Eleanor moved closer.

“My husband asked for his nitroglycerin on that tape.”

Richard inhaled.

“He had it in his pocket.”

“You searched?”

“He pushed me away.”

“And then?”

“He walked back to the house.”

Mara’s statement said Richard left alone.

Eleanor said so.

Richard’s composure cracked.

“Mara was always dramatic.”

Sloan stared at him. “Dad.”

Richard turned on her. “You should have destroyed the files.”

The lobby went silent.

Sloan’s face went blank.

Daniel did not blink. “Would you like to repeat that?”

Richard realized his mistake.

Too late.

The security supervisor had a body camera blinking red on his chest.

Richard stepped backward.

Then the private elevator opened.

A bank employee emerged carrying a gray archival box.

“Mr. Mercer,” she said, “we found the secondary packet you asked us to remove.”

May you like

Eleanor looked at Richard.

“What secondary packet?”
