Chapter 14 - No More Quiet Girls

Naomi brought the email to Maya. Investigators verified its source, and the state suspended the shelter’s planned opening pending a full investigation. The news did not erase the fear Naomi carried, but it gave that fear a direction.

She started meeting former St. Agnes residents in a community legal clinic. Some had good lives and no wish to reopen old wounds. Others had spent decades searching for siblings, struggling with forged identities, or wondering why their adoptive histories contained gaps. Naomi listened without promising answers she could not provide.

An older man named Marcus told her, “Every time somebody asks what happened, they act like we should be grateful we survived.”

“What do you want them to understand?” Naomi asked.

“That surviving isn't the same as getting your life back.”

Alexander quietly paid the clinic’s rent for a year, then told Naomi only after the paperwork was signed. She confronted him in the hallway.

“You keep deciding what help should look like.”

“You said money was needed.”

“I said people needed choices.”

He apologized, without defending himself. Together they established a survivor-led committee that would control how funds were used. It was a small change compared with the damage, but it was real.

Vanessa's lawyer offered Naomi a private settlement if she agreed never to discuss the engagement party. Naomi read the document twice, then tore nothing, shouted nothing, and handed it back.

“Tell your client my face isn’t for sale,” she said.

Maya called later with surprising news: Malcolm had contacted federal investigators through his attorney. He was prepared to return to the country, but only if prosecutors agreed to hear what he knew about Alexander’s father.

Marcus brought a folder of unanswered letters he'd written to agencies since he was eighteen. Each reply told him to try another office. Naomi stacked them by year and realized his life had been measured out in bureaucratic delays. She promised not to let the new committee become another closed door.

“He says there’s a second ledger,” Maya told Naomi. “And it names people who are still in office.”
