Chapter 17 - What Richard Ordered

The USB contained forty-seven minutes of audio.
The crucial part lasted less than four.
We listened at the police station just before dawn.
Richard’s voice from fourteen years ago.
Younger. Stronger. Colder.
“Make the crash look clean.”
Another man asked, “Fatal?”
A pause.
Richard answered, “It needs to end the problem.”
Nathan stood up so suddenly his chair fell backward.
Caroline did not move.
She had already known.
That was the worst part.
The recording continued.
A second voice entered.
Marcus.
“No. Scare her. Get the files. Do not kill the girl.”
Richard replied, “You’ve gone soft.”
Marcus: “I said no bodies.”
The room turned inside out.
For years, Richard had told himself he was the brother trying to contain a monster.
The recording showed something uglier.
They had taken turns being the monster.
Caroline’s crash had been Richard’s order.
Marcus had tried to stop the killing, not the crime.
None of that made Marcus innocent. It just made the truth more complicated than anyone wanted.
Nathan walked into the hallway and threw up.
I followed a minute later.
He was leaning against the wall, shaking.
“I defended him,” he said.
“You were a kid when it started.”
“I wasn’t a kid when I found the accounts.”
“No.”
“I should’ve gone to the police.”
“Yes.”
He looked at me, surprised by the answer.
I was done softening truth to make men feel better.
He nodded slowly. “You’re right.”
Inside the interview room, Caroline gave a full statement. Richard was charged. Marcus, after surgery under armed guard, faced separate federal charges tied to trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping.
Victoria added another layer.
She confessed to forging my signature herself.
Not Richard.
She had practiced it for weeks using thank-you cards I had mailed her.
When Ortiz told me, I felt something snap inside.
All those little manners. Birthday notes. holiday cards. Polite family rituals.
Evidence.
Nathan asked me one question as dawn brightened the station windows.
“Is there any chance for us?”
I looked at the man I had planned to marry in twelve days.
I still loved parts of him.
That did not mean those parts were safe.
“I don’t know.”
He nodded.
Then an agent entered with fresh news.
They had examined the forged merger documents.
The signatures were fake.
May you like
But one board approval was real.
My board chair had signed it willingly.
