Chapter 6 - The Locked Drawer

I recognized the voice only after Margaret asked me to describe it. It belonged to Adrian Pike.
"He wants you home," she said. "That means he wants you somewhere he controls."
"Or he wants me away from something else."
Margaret considered that. "Both can be true."
We went to the police station instead. Detective Elena Brooks, a compact woman with silver streaks in her dark hair, took my statement, accepted copies of the files, and asked questions that forced me to separate what I knew from what I suspected.
"Did you see Vivian push Ruth?"
"Yes."
"Did you personally see anyone forge the documents?"
"No. I heard them discuss it."
"Good. Don't turn an allegation into a memory. We need facts that survive a courtroom."
I liked her immediately.
By dawn, an emergency preservation request had been served on the hotel, and Margaret had filed papers seeking to freeze the Harbor House sale. Neither step guaranteed a victory. Both made it harder for Grant to erase the past.
I slept two hours on Talia's couch. When I woke, there were forty-seven missed calls from Grant and one message from Vivian: APOLOGIZE PUBLICLY OR YOU WILL REGRET IT.
"Does she always sound like a movie villain?" Talia asked from the kitchen.
"Only when she's being polite."
Talia gave a tired laugh. Then she pushed an envelope across the table.
"Mom made me keep this," she said. "She said if anything happened at the hotel, I should show you."
Inside was a photograph taken in the service corridor. Vivian stood beside Adrian, holding a leather folder. Between them was a sheet with Dad's familiar handwriting.
"Ruth took this?"
"She overheard them talking about your dad. They didn't know she was there."
On the back Ruth had written: BLUE CABINET. THIRD DRAWER. ASK ABOUT THE KEY.
I remembered the blue filing cabinet in Dad's former office above the factory. It had been locked after the funeral.
"The factory opens at eight," I said.
Talia checked the time. "Then we've got twenty minutes."
As we headed to the door, her phone buzzed with an alert from the company system.
