Chapter 8 - The White Envelope

Adrian climbed the stairs without waiting for permission. He wore a pale blue tie and the smile of a man who practiced apologies in the mirror.

"Naomi. You should have called."

"You should have stayed away from my father's office."

He held up the envelope. "Your husband is worried about you. After last night, frankly, so am I."

Inside was a notice from a private security contractor, not a court order. It alleged I had damaged company property and was barred from management spaces while an internal investigation proceeded.

"This isn't signed by a judge," I said.

Adrian's smile weakened. "It's a corporate directive."

"Then stop calling it a court order."

Darnell stepped into the doorway with three coworkers. Nobody threatened Adrian. They simply stood there and watched.

"I'm taking my personal papers," I said. "And my attorney will address access."

Adrian's eyes moved toward the cabinet. He seemed more interested in it than in me.

"The cabinet belongs to the company."

"Its contents are being inventoried," I said, and raised my phone to show I was recording. "You can tell Detective Brooks where you'd like them stored."

For the first time, Adrian looked afraid.

I gave Margaret an update, photographed the drawer's contents, and left without removing original company records. She advised me to preserve everything with clear dates and witnesses. Talia carried only Dad's letter, which had been addressed to me personally.

At Harbor House, tenants were gathered around the demolition notice. A little boy asked his grandmother whether demolition meant their bedrooms would fall while they slept. The grandmother told him no, but her hands shook.

I stood on a low concrete step. "I'm Naomi Bennett Whitmore. My father helped build these apartments. I believe the sale was unauthorized. We're challenging it."

A man in a work jacket called, "Belief doesn't pay rent. Can you stop them?"

"I can't promise an outcome yet. I can promise you won't have to find out alone."

Ruth called from the hospital. Her voice was weak but steady.

"The key you found," she said. "Your dad didn't mean the office. He told me once what the first promise was."

"Where?"

May you like

"Under the cornerstone. But Naomi, they already sent men there this morning."
