Chapter 17 - Under the Oak Tree

The officer nearest the door raised his hands and told Celeste to drop the weapon. She did not look at him. Her eyes stayed fixed on Elena, full of years of contempt and the fury of someone whose lies had finally begun to collapse.

"You could have taken the money and disappeared," Celeste said. "You could have had a quiet life. Why come back?"

"Because Theo was still waiting for me."

Celeste laughed. "Children forget. They learn whatever story the adults repeat often enough."

The pistol shook slightly. Celeste had never expected to be cornered in the one place she had spent years controlling. She had expected Adrian to keep grieving, the police to keep following paperwork, and Elena to keep being afraid.

Grace spoke from the doorway. "It's over, Celeste. The recordings are authenticated. The money trail is documented. Walter has testified. The technician is in custody. You can put the gun down and let this end."

"You don't know what I've done for this family," Celeste snapped. "I kept the foundation alive. I kept Adrian functioning. I handled everything while he fell apart."

Elena took one careful step forward. "You used his grief to make him dependent on you. You made Theo think the person who saved him had abandoned him. You let Nora die behind a locked door. That isn't love. It isn't loyalty. It's control."

For a moment, Celeste's face crumpled. Then she lifted the pistol toward the ceiling and fired. The sound exploded through the study. The officers moved in. Celeste stumbled backward, hit the desk, and dropped the weapon. They pinned her to the floor before she could reach it again.

"You think you've won? Adrian will never love you. He'll only keep you because he feels guilty."

Elena's voice remained steady. "Then he can learn to live with the guilt. I won't live inside it for him."

Outside, rain had stopped. The old oak tree stood beyond the terrace, its branches heavy with water. Nora had once hidden a tin box in a hollow near its roots. Elena remembered the promise Nora had made her repeat: if Theo ever asked about the fire, tell him the truth when he was old enough to understand it.

The box was still there, sealed in plastic. Inside was Nora's original diary, with dates, account numbers, and a final entry written on the night she died.

Celeste says she can fix the alarm. She says it will only be down for a few minutes. I don't trust her. I have asked Elena to take Theo outside if anything feels wrong. If I cannot get out, tell Adrian I loved him, even when I was afraid to tell him what I found.

Elena held the page against her chest.

The truth had finally reached daylight.

But the last line on the next page was not about Celeste.

It was addressed to Theo.
