Chapter 9 - The Hidden Box

The boathouse stood on the edge of the Vale property, where the lake narrowed between dark trees. Nora had loved it because no one could see the water from the main road. She used to bring Theo there to feed ducks and tell him stories about brave people who were scared but did the right thing anyway.
"They expect you to panic," she said. "We need to know what the ledger proves and what else they have."
Mason took them to a safe apartment and called Grace Kim, a private investigator who had worked on corporate fraud cases before retiring from the state attorney's office. Grace listened to Walter's account, examined the work order, and asked for the foundation's vendor payments.
Within an hour, she found a string of transfers routed through three fake maintenance companies. The money had been approved by Celeste, then moved into accounts linked to a property group that was buying land around the Vale estate.
"She wasn't just stealing," Grace said. "She was building a position to take over the foundation and force a sale of the estate. Nora must have found the whole plan."
Elena remembered Nora's habit of hiding important things in plain sight. She had once told Elena that the old boathouse had a loose floorboard where Theo dropped toy boats.
They returned to the estate in daylight, with Grace and Mason checking every entrance. Beneath the floorboard, Elena found a tin box wrapped in a dish towel. Inside were bank statements, a small recorder, and a photograph of Celeste standing beside the alarm technician on the night of the fire.
"She was there before the fire," Elena said. "Look at the clock behind them."
Grace turned on the recorder. Static filled the room, then Nora's voice emerged, low and frightened.
"You said the transfer was temporary. You said Adrian would never know. But this money is for families who lost everything. You stole from people who trusted us."
Celeste's voice answered, "You should have left it alone."
"There's more," Elena said. "The recorder has a second file."
Elena closed her eyes. She remembered Nora's favorite phrase, the one she used whenever Theo was afraid of thunder.
"Courage is a choice," Elena whispered.
The file unlocked.

Before the recording could play, every light in the room went out.
A window shattered behind them.
