Chapter 12 - The Wrong Father

Vincent took Sloane through the rear stairwell while Grace stayed long enough to hear the front door splinter. Detective Pike came in shouting her name. She ducked into a supply closet, climbed onto a shelf, and pulled herself into a service hatch above the hallway. Years in the circus had taught her how to be small where other people saw no space at all.
From the darkness, she watched Pike seize Sloane's chart and tear out three pages. He spoke into his phone. “Tell the Broker the doctor talked.”
Grace recorded his words on her own phone. Then she crawled through the hatch to the fire escape and dropped into Vincent's waiting arms. Her shoulder protested; she didn't care.
At a safe house across the river, Sloane told the rest of the story. Clara had been married to a wealthy man named Richard Vale, a financier whose charities funded Saint Agnes. When Clara discovered that his adoption network was a front for selling stolen children to wealthy buyers, she tried to leave with their daughter.
“Grace was two,” Sloane said. “Daniel was the circus mechanic Clara hired to drive them away. He raised her because Richard had the resources to hunt them forever.”
Grace stared at the floor. “My real father was the man doing this?”
“Biology isn't a character reference,” Sloane replied. “Daniel was your father in every way that counted.”
Grace cried then, not because of the blood she carried, but because Daniel had stayed beside her through childhood fevers and scraped knees while hiding a nightmare he couldn't explain.
Sloane showed them a photograph of Richard Vale. Grace had seen his face before—in the mirror behind Vanessa at the theater, just for a second.
“Richard's alive?” Vincent asked.
“Very much. He goes by Victor Raines now. He runs an international security firm.”
Marco called with another discovery. The Whitmore Theater's ownership had been transferred that morning to Raines Holdings. Grace searched the company on her phone and found a polished website full of charitable language and photographs of children smiling in school uniforms.

Then one image made her blood turn cold: Victor Raines shaking hands with Leo Mercer, both men standing beside a hospital bed.
The photograph was dated six months ago.
