Chapter 5 - The Price of Protection

Vincent didn't reach for a weapon. “She can tell you herself whether I kidnapped her.”

Pike's smile was smooth. “People say all sorts of things under pressure.”

Grace stepped into the rain. “I came here alone. Your friends started shooting.”

“Careful,” Pike said. “That's a serious accusation.”

“So is kidnapping.”

Police sirens sounded beyond the waterfront. Vincent's lawyer arrived minutes later with a recording from Marco's dashboard camera, but Pike had already vanished into the maze of containers. Eli went with the paramedics, refusing to give his real address. No one recovered the gunmen's SUV; another truck had dragged it away.

At Vincent's mansion, Grace paced through the kitchen while Nora made coffee strong enough to remove paint. Vincent entered without his jacket. A white scar ran from his collarbone to his throat.

“How did you know where I was?” Grace demanded.

“Nora called Marco.”

“I asked her to wait until sunrise.”

“She decided she'd rather have you alive and angry.”

Grace wanted to argue. Instead, she sat down hard. “Eli said your father helped hide a child-trafficking operation.”

Vincent went still. “Tell me everything.”

She did. He listened without interrupting, even when she repeated Salvatore's name. At the end he looked older than thirty-six.

“I built my business on the promise that kids were off-limits,” he said. “If my father broke that rule, I need proof.”

“Your business?” Grace asked. “That's a fancy word for hurting people.”

He accepted the blow. “You're right.”

For the first time, she believed he wasn't trying to impress her.

The envelope held a shipping manifest from eleven years earlier. One cargo entry had been circled: BELLWETHER, UNIT 7. Destination: Saint Agnes Children's Home. Beneath it, a handwritten note read: The blue ledger stays with the bird.

Grace remembered Daniel's little wooden bird, a blue music box with one broken wing. She had left it at the hospital after her accident. Or thought she had.

Marco entered carrying a thin file. “I found Vanessa's payments. Three million went to a company owned by Detective Pike. Another seven million was placed in escrow the day she offered Grace ten million.”

“Escrow for what?” Grace asked.

Marco swallowed. “The payment condition wasn't a performance. It was confirmation of your death.”
