Chapter 13 - What the Bracelet Cost

The figure was Dr. Shaw.
I would have recognized that stiff posture anywhere. He was holding Camille's bracelet by its broken clasp, the way my father had held it at the funeral.
Detective Bell sent the photo to our secure case folder. She was investigating the vehicle's last known location and wouldn't tell me more until her team had a plan.
"I can help," I said.
"Then tell me what you haven't told me yet."
I looked at Abigail, who gave the smallest nod.
"My shipping companies have falsified invoices," I said. "Victor handled the dangerous side. I signed papers because the money was good and because I believed being ignorant was different from being responsible."
Bell didn't blink.
"It isn't."
"I know."
She took out a recorder. I began naming names.
Three hours later, I returned home and found Elena on the back stairs, crying so quietly I nearly passed without noticing.
"You should go to Dana," I said. "She needs someone she trusts."
"I will. First I have to tell you something."
She showed me a drawing she'd made at eleven: Camille wearing a blue sweater, her father with a lunch pail, a row of yellow birds on the warehouse roof.
"This was in my school folder. My mother hid it."
"Why?"
"She thought if I remembered the pier, I'd try to go back."
She touched the picture of my sister.
"I didn't remember Camille's face clearly. Now I do. She was trying to get my dad to laugh because he'd worked two shifts. When the alarm started, she ran toward the building instead of away."
"She never could stand someone being left behind," I said.
Elena nodded, tears slipping down her face.
"Your mom didn't save me because I was special. She saved me because I was there. That's who she was before she got scared."
I stared at her.
"Do you hate her?"
"I hate what she kept silent about. That's different."
My phone buzzed. Bell had found the location of the picture through a background detail, an old freight sign visible through the window.
"We're moving now," she said. "Stay where you are."

Then Miles ran into the hallway.
"Rafe. The perimeter alarms just went off. Somebody opened the north gate with your mother's old access code."
