Chapter 14 - A Badge Is Not a Promise

"She's with them," Mara whispered.
Reed heard. Her hand moved toward her gun, but Ethan slammed the vault door between them. A bullet rang against the metal. Mara pulled the fire alarm, and the basement filled with a deafening bell.
"This way!" she shouted.
They crawled through a maintenance tunnel that opened beside the greenhouse. Ethan's lungs burned. He kept seeing Reed's wrist, Daniel's drawing, Lily asleep in the stranger's car.
Olivia was waiting in a borrowed sedan. "Where's Reed?"
"Compromised," Ethan said. "We need somebody outside her chain of command."
Olivia had already called a local investigative reporter, Tessa Ward. Tessa had spent two years exposing illegal medical billing at St. Agnes. She had once called Olivia a coward for refusing to go on record. Olivia hadn't forgotten.

Ethan handed her Daniel's video, copies of the ledger, and the snapshot of Reed's tattoo. Tessa watched without blinking.
"You need to release this," Olivia told her. "Now."
"I will. But somebody has to confirm the patient list."
"I can," Mara said. "My sister's on it."
Tessa looked up. "Then you'll have to attach your name. They'll come for you."
"They already did."
Tessa uploaded the first story to a protected newsroom server. Within minutes her editor called, shouting for sources and legal review. An hour later the headline went live: WHITMORE CHARITY LINKED TO SECRET HUMAN TRIALS.
Charles's attorneys denied everything. Evelyn's spokesperson claimed she'd been kidnapped. Vale's former colleagues called him a visionary.
Then Tessa's phone rang from an unlisted number. She listened, color draining from her face.
"What is it?" Ethan asked.
Tessa covered the receiver. "The caller says Hannah Mercer is alive. And she'll trade herself for Lily."
Ethan felt the bus station tilt around him.
May you like
"Where?"
Tessa swallowed. "The abandoned ferry terminal. At midnight.
