Chapter 19 - Inside the Ring
Ethan stared at Olivia's diamond ring. It had belonged to his grandmother, Beatrice claimed, although Ethan had never seen a photograph of her wearing it. Olivia slipped it off and laid it in his palm.
"Your mother gave it to you before the proposal," she said. "Remember?"
He did. Beatrice had hugged him then, holding on a second longer than usual. Make sure Olivia wears it, she'd whispered. He'd thought she was being sentimental.
Under a jeweler's loupe, they found a pin-sized seam inside the band. An independent technician opened the hidden compartment and removed a memory chip no bigger than a grain of rice.
The chip held Daniel's final recordings and a list of Harbor investors, including judges, hospital executives, and two senior officials. Beatrice had kept it hidden for years, then placed it where she hoped Ethan would one day look.
"Why didn't she tell me?" he asked.
"Because she was scared," Olivia said. "Fear can make people do terrible things. It can also make them wait too long to do the right one."
The final recording showed Daniel speaking to someone off camera. "No deal. Release the patients. Every one of them."
A man's voice answered, "Then you leave me no choice."
The camera swung. Dr. Vale held a syringe filled with amber-marked liquid. Evelyn stood by the door. Charles, visible in a mirror, watched and did nothing.
Ethan turned away. For five years he'd replayed the car crash in his mind, trying to imagine Daniel's last seconds. Now there was a different ending, worse and clearer.
"You can stop it," Olivia told him. "You've got enough proof."
"I don't want to stop," Ethan said. "I want them to feel what he felt."
Mara stepped closer. "I understand. But revenge gives them another victim. Evidence puts them in a cell."
Ethan looked down at the chip, then at Lily playing with crayons beside Hannah. He understood what Daniel had been trying to protect.

"Mr. Whitmore, Charles just escaped federal custody. And he took your mother with him.
