Chapter 19 - The Hearing

The emergency hearing drew reporters, company representatives, and relatives Adrian hadn't seen in a decade. Keene claimed that Margaret had transferred controlling ownership of the estate to the charitable trust before her death.
His attorney displayed a signature and notarized paperwork. Adrian's own counsel looked worried.
Then Nora stood to address the court on her earlier notarial error. She didn't soften it, explain it away, or blame her father.
“I certified a document without verifying the signer properly,” she said. “That mistake helped conceal a fraudulent transfer. I am providing every record I have and accepting review of my conduct.”
Keene's attorney asked whether she was trying to save her brother's property.
“No,” Nora answered. “I'm trying to give the Alvarez family back theirs.”
The state presented evidence of inconsistent filing dates and financial transactions. A handwriting expert's findings were preliminary, and the judge made clear the hearing wasn't a criminal trial. But the paperwork was disputed enough to justify temporarily preventing any sale or transfer of the contested estate assets.
Keene's expression finally cracked.
Outside the courthouse, Harris informed Adrian that Keene had been arrested under warrants related to witness intimidation and financial fraud. Other allegations remained under investigation.
Celeste approached Adrian as he descended the steps. She wore no jewelry. Without the perfect makeup and polished smile, she looked younger and more tired.
“I gave them the rest of my messages,” she said. “All of them.”
“Good.”
“I know that doesn't fix what I did.”
“No,” Adrian said. “It doesn't.”
She nodded and walked away without asking for forgiveness.
Mateo was waiting beside his sister Isabel. Adrian shook her hand, then hugged Mateo hard enough to make them both laugh through tears.

Across the street, Sofia stood with Lucy and Ben. They were together. That was the victory the cameras couldn't quite understand.
Then Harris approached Nora with a sealed file. “One more item came out of Margaret's box,” she said. “It's addressed to Adrian. She wanted him to open it after the case was public.”
